Land for Sale in New York

New York was one of the original 13 colonies. As a colony, its delegates were not authorized to vote for independence, but the state did end up supporting the Declaration of Independence and became the 11th state in the Union.

New York is highly populated, with the overall population nearing 20 million people. That makes it the fourth most populated state in the country, while it ranks much smaller in land mass than many, with 54.5 thousand miles. This highly populated state offers a variety of land for sale in NY.

There is little doubt it can be chilly in winter. Weather and precipitation vary up and down the state with daytime highs in the 30s and 40s Fahrenheit in winter, and upper 70s to mid-80s in summer. It rains all year round with an average annual rainfall of more than 46 inches. This precipitation is compounded with snow during winter.

New York's Cities

History is not clear as to why New York was nicknamed the Empire State, but its Empire State Building remains one of its most famed landmarks. The 102-story art-deco style building was built in 1931 and remained the world's tallest building until the North Tower of the World Trade Center was built in 1970.

The Empire State Building is located in New York City, by far the state's largest city with 40% of the population. In fact, New York City is the most populated city in the country, compounded with its more than 60 million visitors each year.

There are other large cities. To the north, the capital city of Albany is home to some 100,000 residents. Buffalo, home of the well-known football team the Buffalo Bills, has a population of more than 258,000, and Rochester has more than 208,000.

New York City and other large cities offer a variety of land for sale in NY, as well as hunting land & horse farms for sale all over the state.

Farmland, Mountains, Rivers, and Lakes

However, the remainder of the state is less urban with about one-quarter of its land enveloped in farmland. That equals about 7.2 million acres, with approximately 60% devoted to cropland, 24% to woodland, and 10% grazing pastures. There are some 35,500 farms producing milk, apples, beef, and maple syrup. Other crops include grapes, squash, and cherries.

New York's geography is diverse with forests, mountains, rivers, and lakes. Its two high spots are the Adirondack Mountains and the Appalachian Highlands. The Appalachian Highlands, encompass the Catskill Mountains and Kittatinny Mountain Ridge. The state’s geography makes it the perfect spot to search for hunting land and horse farms for sale in NY.

Adirondack Park is larger than any National Park in the contiguous U.S., containing 9,375 miles. Some of the state's most beautiful lakes are here including Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics, Saranac Lake, and Lake George.

The Longest River and Other More Little-Known Facts

The state's longest river extends from the Adirondacks to New York Bay, running 315 miles. Many outside of New York gained further knowledge of the Hudson River following Captain Sully Sullenberger's successful landing in January 2009 of an Airbus A320-214 on its freezing waters following engine failure after an episode with birds. Everyone on that US Airways Flight 1549 survived thanks to Sully's expertise in piloting skills.

Other lesser-known facts of New York include:

  • One can receive a fine of $25 for flirting in New York.
  • Rip Van Winkle lived, and slept, in the Catskills.
  • New York was home to the first railroad route in the U.S., an 11-mile stretch from Albany to Schenectady.
  • The Empire State Building has its own zip code.
  • New Yorkers drink, on an average, seven times more coffee than those in any other city in the U.S.
  • The women's suffragette movement in the U.S. started here in 1848 followed by women earning the right to vote within the state in 1917.

Despite the average Manhattan one-bedroom apartment renting for an average $3,400 per month, there is a lot of affordable land for sale in New York. From two-acre parcels of lightly wooded areas and subdivisions to 40-50-acres of great fishing or hunting properties. Also available are 100-200 acre working farms, multi-acre equine breeding facilities, and family ranches or retirement property.
