The Lay of the Land in Nebraska

When most people think about Nebraska, they picture acres of flat land filled with wheat and corn. While there are some stretches of plains in Nebraska, large chunks of the state are quite hilly. The plains, with several rivers and streams within them, are found on the east side of the state, which is where a large majority of the state's farmland is located. The western side of the state is home to Nebraska's Sand Hills. The hills are essentially sand dunes that attract many visitors each year.

The Sand Hills are up to 400 feet tall and 20 miles long, and slopes can have a 25% steepness rating. The Sand Hills were created by grass and other vegetation catching and capturing the sand that was blowing across the prairies. There are 19,300 square miles worth of sand hills. Beyond the sand hills in the prairies are perfect for growing an abundance of crops. We have an incredible selection of farms for sale in Nebraska , join our Land Broker co-op here!

Visitors are often surprised to discover that Nebraska's Sand Hills are not completely dry and dusty. It's not uncommon to find lakes, streams, and marshes at the base of the hills. An underground reservoir contains between 700 and 800 gallons of water to supply these wet sections. The Sand Hills are home to more than 700 different plants which serve as feed for the 535,500 head of beef cattle that roam the hills.

The two biggest rivers in Nebraska are the Missouri River on the eastern side of the state and the Platte River.
